My Journey with Kitten Corner
When I first heard about Kitten Corner, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating abused and abandoned cats, I knew I had to get involved. My love for animals and photography converged perfectly in this opportunity, and I reached out to them with an offer to help. Little did I know, this experience would enrich me as much as it would benefit the cats.
Discovering Kitten Corner
I discovered Kitten Corner through Valley Farm Animal Hospital, where I take my chinchilla for care. They hosted an event to support Kitten Corner, showcasing adorable kittens in need of forever homes. Their mission focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating cats, providing them with love and care until they can be adopted. Inspired by their work, I decided to offer my photography services to help these beautiful cats find loving families.
A Heartfelt Collaboration
After contacting Karen from Kitten Corner via WhatsApp, we quickly arranged to meet at their event. From our first conversation, it became clear how passionate and dedicated the Kitten Corner team was. They felt thrilled at the idea of a photoshoot, seeing it as a fantastic opportunity to showcase their cats’ personalities and increase their chances of being adopted.
The Photography Session
On a sunny Sunday, the 19th of May 2024, Karen, Caron, and Talita brought 13 cats to my studio in Faerie Glen. These cats had varied backgrounds, some with heartbreaking stories of survival and others recovering from severe health issues. Despite their pasts, their resilience and affectionate nature shone through. The session was filled with moments of joy and tenderness, as we worked together to capture each cat’s unique essence.
Preparing for the shoot involved more than just setting up the equipment. I made sure to have catnip spray, toys, and treats on hand to keep the cats engaged and comfortable. Throughout the session, I paid close attention to their moods, ensuring they felt safe and relaxed. The presence of the Kitten Corner team, tending to the cats not being photographed, made the environment even more nurturing and supportive.
Capturing Special Moments
One of the most memorable moments happened with a tiny black kitten with golden yellow eyes. Despite being only five months old, she was remarkably small due to her rough start in life. During the shoot, she constantly sought my lap, and after photographing her, I gave in to her need for affection. She nestled under my chin and later perched on my shoulder, melting my heart completely. These interactions reminded me of the unconditional love and trust these cats offer, despite their challenging beginnings.
Making a Difference
The photographs immediately impacted the rescue efforts. While it is still early days, one of the kittens has already found a new home. I remain hopeful that more will follow. These images not only highlight the cats’ beauty but also tell their stories, helping potential adopters see them as the loving companions they are.
Reflections and Lessons
This experience reaffirmed my belief in the power of photography to change lives. Working with cats presented different challenges compared to dogs, but the rewards were equally profound. By being patient, and reading the cats’ cues, we were able to create a space where they could express themselves freely and happily.
